The contract for the construction of nuclear facilities for LILW disposal facility was signed

A contract for the construction of nuclear facilities as part of the low- and medium-level radioactive waste disposal site was ceremoniously signed in the Krško Cultural Center. They signed it CEO of ARAO, MSc. Sandi Viršek and leading partner of the joint venture, Riko CEO, Janez Škrabec

The chosen construction contractor is a joint venture with leading partner Riko d.o.o. from Ljubljana and partners Kolektor CPG, Nova Gorica, CGP, Novo mesto and Kostak, d.d. iz KrškegaThe total estimated value of the construction of nuclear facilities amounts to just under 93 million euros and includes the construction of a disposal silo, a hall above the silo, an administrative service and technological facility. Construction is expected to take 42 months.

LILW disposal facility is the first independent nuclear facility to be built in independent Slovenia. The project has been divided into several phases since 2004, when the first spatial conference was held. Placement in the space was followed by an environmental impact assessment, a safety report, and in 2023, the acquisition of a building permit and the preparation and implementation of tenders for construction contractors.

The infrastructure works on the construction site are mostly finished, and the planned timeline for the continuation of the work, i.e. the construction of nuclear facilities, is as follows; preparatory work will take approximately two months, six months for the construction of the primary lining or diaphragms, 21 months construction of the secondary cladding, six months construction of the temporary hall, 17 months construction of the technological facility and 14 months construction of the administrative-service facility.

We plan to deposit the first radioactive waste in the disposal in 2027, i.e. the Slovenian half of waste from the NEK NPP and institutional waste from the Central Storage Facility in Brinje near Ljubljana.
