Government of the Republic of Slovenia approves ARAO Business Plan for 2026–2027

The Government of the Republic of Slovenia, at a session of the Committee for the Economy, approved the Business Plan of the Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (ARAO) for the period 2026–2027, which was adopted by the ARAO Management Board on 3 February 2026.

As the operator of the mandatory national public service for radioactive waste management, ARAO prepares biennial business plans in accordance with the applicable legislation. The Business Plan for 2026–2027 defines the implementation of public services as well as professional, technical, and development activities that ensure safe and responsible management of radioactive waste in Slovenia.

During this period, ARAO plans to continue the construction of the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste repository and preparations for its trial operation in the second half of 2027. At the same time, the agency will continue long-term monitoring and maintenance of the closed repositories Jazbec and Boršt and will carry out the management of institutional radioactive waste generated in medicine, research, and industry.

The plan also foresees initial activities related to the preparation of future solutions for the management of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

ARAO’s operations are financed from the state budget of the Republic of Slovenia and from earmarked funds of the Nuclear Power Plant Krško Fund (NEK Fund). Activities related to the management of institutional radioactive waste are mostly financed from the state budget and partly from payments by waste holders. Activities related to the preparation for disposal and disposal of waste and spent fuel from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant are financed exclusively from earmarked funds.

With the approved Business Plan, ARAO continues to implement key national responsibilities in the field of safe and sustainable radioactive waste management and the development of infrastructure that will ensure a high level of protection for people and the environment in the long term.
