Start of excavation of the disposal silo at the construction site
At the construction site of the LILW disposal facility in Vrbina, we have recently begun an extremely important phase of construction, with the excavation of the silo.
The construction of the silo involves an underground excavation, which is carried out with two excavators, and the excavated material is loaded into transport crates, which are then brought to the surface by crane. During the excavation, it is extremely important to pay attention to the pumping wells, which are arranged over the entire surface of the storage silo and serve to relieve pore pressures, i.e. pressures in pores filled with groundwater.
The excavation of the silo also reveals and brings to light the work we have done in recent months, the extensive and demanding construction of the storage silo's retaining wall (diaphragm) that protects the silo excavation.
