Successful transportation of the radiation source for further processing and recycling
ARAO expert team successfully transported radiation source from Slovenia to the Czech Republic, where it will be further processed and recycled.
Device was installed in one of the Slovenian rolling mills until 2017, with a radioactivity level of approximately 650 gigabecquerels (GBq). Contains a sealed radioactive source of cesium radiation (137Cs) and 33 kilograms of depleted uranium, which adequately protects the radioactive source. The device was stored in the Central Storage Facility in Brinje, Dol pri Ljubljani, until it was taken away.
Due to the complexity of the transportation, our experts put a lot of effort into organizing the transport process and finding a suitable recipient, as there are only few providers with a comprehensive solution for recycling such sources. The receiver of the source is the company Isotrend from Prague, where the device will be properly dismantled and the source of radiation will be used for another useful purpose.
By successfully removing the source from the storage, we significantly reduced the total activity of the stored radioactive waste and ensured that the exported source will not be disposed of in Slovenia, but will be usefully used in the future.
