International mission in the field of handling sealed radiation sources successfully concluded
ARAO has successfully passed an independent international technical review mission in the field of management of closed radiation sources that are no longer in use. The mission was carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with the aim of an independent assessment of the strategy and programs in the field of dealing with sealed radiation sources. The experts focused on the processes of acquisition, transportation, storage, processing and preparation of these resources and assessed the formal and technical suitability of the premises, equipment, management system and staff training for safe handling.
Mission took place from September 30 to October 2, 2024, and in addition to the review of documentation, also included a practical presentation of procedures, where ARAO demonstrated the implementation of individual activities of handling closed radiation sources. On the last day of the mission, members of the ARAO expert team were briefed on the findings and received some useful suggestions, but no recommendations, confirming the high level of compliance with international standards and best practices.
Added value of the mission was the independent confirmation that ARAO's procedures, infrastructure and equipment it uses are in line with international best practices. Feedback from recognized experts will further strengthen our efforts to achieve the highest standards. Strengthening national capacities in this area remains one of ARAO's key priorities, so we are particularly proud of this important achievement.
